How can i wash a duvet

Many duvets and quilts will recommend taking the item to a professional dry cleaner, but it is possible to wash a duvet at home as long as you have a big enough washing machine and follow the care label instructions carefully.

One of the most frequently asked questions is 'can you wash a duvet in a washing machine? Duvets or quilts with synthetic fillings can usually be washed at home, but some domestic washing machines do not have a large enough capacity to allow the duvet or quilt to move around freely in the drum.

After washing a duvet or quilt, make sure you have completely dried and aired it before using it again. It is important to check the care label of feather and down-filled duvets and quilts as you may not be able to machine wash your duvet but it may instead require dry-cleaning. To wash your duvet, set the washer to a gentle, warm water cycle.

If your machine has the option, include an extra rinse and spin cycle. Remove your duvet from the wash and check for any soap residue. If you feel soap residue or see suds, rewash your duvet without soap, or put it through another rinse and spin cycle. Set the dryer to a low or air-dry setting and begin the drying process. To avoid using the dryer, you can also leave your duvet out to air dry on a clothesline or drying rack. While your duvet is in the dryer, check on it periodically to ensure that the fluff is evenly distributed.

It can take upwards of three or more hours for your bedding to be completely dry so plan your day accordingly. Once your duvet is thoroughly dry, you can remove it from the dryer and get ready to wash your pillows or work on getting your sheets white again.

If this seems like too much, at least once or twice a year will do. We realize you probably want to live in a clean environment, and knowing how to wash a duvet is one part of that. Thanks as always for the great tips! Ok, this may sound silly, but why do we care if our bedding is organic?

FYI, every time I change my bed, I spray the supposedly non-washable feather bed and the mattress cover itself with a light cover of antibacterial essential oils usually my own version of Thieves oil or the like in distilled water, then let dry completely before remaking the bed. Does it really help? Love, someone with an out of control bedding fetish that will often spray the same solution in the laundry closet and other fabric storage areas, even the clothes in the offseason section of my closet.

Freshen up First There have been a couple situations where we definitely needed to launder our duvets but for the most part if you have a cover on it, you can easily freshen up your duvet before you need to all-out wash it.

Follow the Directions Most bedding has care direction labels on them — always check those labels before putting them in the washing machine or dryer. Dry Thoroughly Once the duvet is washed and the excess water has been wrung out, you can now place it in the dryer. If you do decide to pack your down items away, they must be clean and thoroughly dry before they're stored.

For protection, wrap the down bedding in cotton—a laundry bag works wonderfully—and place it in a well-ventilated closet. Fixing a hole in your comforter or duvet is worth the effort as they can be expensive to replace. For smaller holes, an iron-on patch is a quick and effective solution. If you have a larger tear, try hand-stitching the fabric together or adding a patch made of similar material. If you have any stains on your bedding, it's a good idea to spot-treat them before machine-washing.

To address the fabric directly, adjust or shake the down filling away from the spot. Next, wet the area using a spray bottle of water, and then apply a stain remover of your choice. Pat the fabric with a clean white rag, and let it sit for 20 minutes. If the stain needs more work, try rubbing the fabric together or using a toothbrush to scrub away the soil. Repeat if necessary, and then begin the washing process.
