Why do vr6 sound good

Go figure Relative to a similarly sized 4 cylinder, the VR6 is lightyears more taxing to service and fully understand than a simple 4 banger out of a Civic.

And their complicated nature makes them hard to modify too. Because all 6 cylinders share the one head, they are all packed meticulously into the block like sardines, which means that if you want to bore it out and make a crap ton of power, you best be prepared to do a thorough rebuild and lots of machining.

Despite the cons we mentioned, this marvel of German engineering is truly one of the coolest engines of all time. For a mass-producing company like VW to go out and design a completely new engine layout and then nail it, is a testament to their dedication.

There is a reason why VR6 Golfs go for a good sum of money now because they sound like nothing you've ever heard, they make great power, and they fit in something as small as a GTI.

It's that raw, metallic rasp that is so distinctive - sure, it's muffled up nice and quietly in most other BMW's, but the M3 has the full vocal range it deserves. But you can't argue it doesn't. Maybe it's the basso profundo undertone and the high-rev wail of 8, rpm. Maybe it's the throttle growl with open exhaust.

Who knows? My goodness. You just can't have a list of "best sounding engines" without a gold old-fashioned American pushrod V8, and as far as sounding nasty and V8-ey, the LSx is where it's at. It's a simplistic sound, a huge amount of induction roar as cubic inches LS1 guys, you know it's true haul your F-body down the road faster than the other next F-body next to you. Redneck noise? That's why there's so many of the blasted things everywhere, blaring out that so well-known V8 rumble.

You gotta love it. Audi's 5-banger has an absolutely distinctive howl to it that you just won't mistake for anything else. It's knife-edged sharp, but has a touch of a warble to it - that extra cylinder makes for some interesti ng harmonies. Doesn't the 24v have a plastic inlet manifold?

One thing in common though, both 12 and 24V are pretty coarse engines as they approach the red line. They're no where near as refined as a BMW straight 6 :D. Out of interest and slightly off topic, but do vr's actually make good power all the way to the red line which im assuming is 6.

Or are they like 9a valvers, 6k and change gear lol. My VR makes much much better power to the redline and a better sound then my R32, which runs out of steam around 5K. Completely different powerbands, love driving the R32 around town but the VR howl at top end is like nothing else. You can post now and register later.
