What is the average number of puppies for a golden retriever

When pregnant, most Golden Retrievers become extremely affectionate. There can be some exceptions who wish to be left alone. This change in behavior usually only lasts the first few weeks.

After only a few weeks, you may notice weight gain. As the puppies grow inside your Golden Retriever, her stomach will bloat. The size of her belly depends on the position of the puppies. On rare occasions you may not be able to tell your dog is pregnant until the last 10 days of gestation. Towards the end of the pregnancy - half way through the 3rd trimester - your dog's nipples will begin to enlarge.

During the last few days, you may even see some milk leakage. The puppies will shortly arrive once this happens, so be prepared! As your Golden Retriever goes through changes, she will begin to have vaginal discharge.

This can occur around 1 or 2 months into the pregnancy. The discharge will normally be clear or milky colored. If it is pink or bloody, contact your vet immediately.

Litter size is also determined by the time of breeding. The largest litter was twelve adorable eight week old Golden Retriever puppies sprinting into the house from the outside patio. Our friends at Guide Dogs of America have experienced many, many more litters then I have or probably ever will in my lifetime. I would guess they have a litter of pups at the school nearly every week sometimes two litters a week! The largest litter I heard about was 16 Golden Retriever puppies! Let me say that again: 16 puppies!!!

The smallest litter size was 1 lonely puppy…although only children get all the attention…right, Ali Ali is my wife…an only child :? After personal experience and talking to friends and family the consensus was Raven could have any where between 1 and 16 puppies.

After talking to friends, family, and doing my internet research the consensus was Raven would probably have between puppies with the outside possibilities of only 1 pup or up to 17 remote possibility of 24! Many moons ago I volunteered as a foster for one of our local rescues. We got those little cuties when they were about weeks old and at that age they were a handful.

I specifically remember one of the rescue leaders saying that 5 or fewer puppies are much easier to handle. My fingers were crossed…. However, the day we planned on bringing her in for an X-Ray her temperature dropped which was an indication she was close to giving birth. I waited with Raven and her puppies for 4 more hours monitoring and making sure everyone was okay. Can you guess how many puppies were in her second litter? This book is a good starting point for learning the basics of raising and training a puppy.

Many Bulldogs will require veterinary assistance or a C-section, given that the puppies are often too large for the birth canal. Typically, a Beagle will have anywhere from 1 to 10 puppies per litter. In Beagles, litter sizes tend to stay consistent in each mother. So if a Beagle has a large litter, her next litter will likely also be large and vice versa.

Rottweiler litters can average from 6 to 12 puppies, and larger litters are often expected. That said, it is totally normal for a first-time Rottweiler mother to have just two puppies. The average number of puppies in a German Shorthaired Pointer litter ranges from 8 to 12 puppies, but both smaller and larger litters are both expected. Dachshunds usually have 1 to 6 puppies per litter, but can have more depending on the size of the dog.

The largest litter of puppies ever born is currently recorded at For instance, the Pekingese, weighing in at just pounds, may give birth to as many as 10 puppies. Big litters can be dangerous to the mother dog dam due to delivery problems, especially in smaller dogs.

Some of the puppies may be delivered stillborn, and the dam may become exhausted during delivery. Reputable breeders want more puppies if they have a lineup of people wanting them.

Dog owners may want more bundles of squirming puppy joy from their canine companion. Humans have control over certain aspects of when and how a female dog is bred that can affect litter size, but there are limits. Artificially inseminated dams produce smaller litters than those impregnated naturally.
